Institute for Javanese Islam Research (IJIR)

The Institute for Javanese Islam Research (IJIR) is a research center at Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah (UIN SATU) Tulungagung. It focuses on developing studies, research, and public dissemination related to Javanese Islam. Founded on January 3, 2017, IJIR has established itself as a center of excellence in Javanese Islam studies, especially those rooted in the Mataraman region of East Java.

Beyond research and publication, IJIR is also actively involved in mentoring students and lecturers to strengthen their research skills and academic quality. To support this goal, IJIR regularly offers programs such as Research Courses and Writing Clinics. These programs are open not only to the academic community of UIN SATU Tulungagung but also to students and lecturers from other universities.

From 2017 to 2020, IJIR operated as a study center under the Department of Aqidah and Islamic Philosophy within the Faculty of Ushuluddin, Adab, and Da’wah. During this period, IJIR was recognized as one of the faculty’s excellence-driven institutions, and its programs attracted participants from several departments, particularly Sociology of Religion and Islamic Civilization History.

In 2021, following the institutional transformation from IAIN Tulungagung to UIN Tulungagung, IJIR was officially repositioned as a university-level study center under the Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M). This transition did not change IJIR’s core mission as a leading center for Javanese Islam studies.

Overall, since its founding, IJIR has consistently played a key role in shaping the academic identity of UIN SATU Tulungagung, reinforcing the university’s commitment to promoting Javanese Islam and the Mataraman local tradition as an important area of scholarly excellence.
